The tortilla is one of Mexico's traditional foods. It is characterized by the use of corn, a staple since pre-Hispanic times. After undergoing nixtamalization—a process where corn is soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution to improve its nutritional value—the corn is ground to create a soft dough, which is the base for molding tortillas.
This mural depicts an ancestral method of making tortillas, where a metate—a traditional grinding stone—was used to grind the corn and create the dough. The tortillas were then cooked over a wood-fired stove. Even today, in various villages, tortillas are still made in this traditional manner. There's nothing like freshly made tortillas! The frame tiles are Royal Crown Talavera ceramic Tile. This mural is composed of 63 pieces: 35 for the main picture, 24 side frame tiles, and 4 corner tiles.
Important Note: You will receive the tiles in a box; the mural is not mounted to a board.
Each tile is handmade and fired at high temperatures to achieve a very solid and consistent piece of clay. This clay tile exemplifies the exquisite beauty that Mexican craftsmen infuse into each item they create. As each tile is hand-painted, no two tile murals are exactly alike! Small differences in size, weight, and colors are to be expected.
