This raised, hand-painted tile features a gray background depicting one of life's happiest moments: a wedding. It vibrantly celebrates the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), a Mexican tradition observed on November 2nd. During this time, families honor their deceased loved ones by visiting cemeteries to clean and decorate graves with flowers, candles, and personal mementos. They also create altars, known as "ofrendas," adorned with offerings such as the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, to encourage visits by their spirits.
La Catrina, originally created by Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada, has become an iconic symbol of this holiday, representing the Mexican perspective on death as an integral and inevitable part of life. Her elegant portrayal reminds us that, regardless of social status, we are all equal in the face of mortality.
